Hop Against Homophobia

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia. Its a day to raise awareness, and celebrate diversity. In short, it's time to erase homophobia. And let's stop  trans*phobia and *queerphobia while we're at it.

In fact, fuck *phobias in general.

I'm going to co-opt this space to preach a little. I want to stop saying "It's okay to be gay." Why? Because no one should ever need a qualifier to be okay. Whatever you are, wherever you fit best in the alphabet soup, or out of it, it's okay. It's okay to simply be who you are.

Gay, straight, trans, bi, tall, short, fat, thin, geeky, smart, stupid. It just doesn't matter. It's okay to be.

No matter who you are, what you are, or who you want to be, go for it. Be who you were born to be. That's all you can do, and the rest will fall into place.

It's okay to be.

What do you think?

Leave a comment below with your email address for a chance to win anything from my backlist. Contest ends May 20, and winners will be announced May 21.

  9. Everyday we meet people and form opinions of them without knowing what they do behind closed doors. People are people and I hope to live to see they day where they are accepted for the person they are and not how they look, act, or who they choose to love!

  18. Totally agree. And I like how you cut out gay and said it's okay to be. We all should be able to just be. I damn sure wish the rest of the world would catch on to such a simple thing... just be.

  24. How true. You have be the best 'you' you can be- no on else can do that for you. Society should stop being afraid of the different and embrace it. If everyone was the same, what a boring world this would be. Tami (tb-kindle@hotmail.com)

  28. Wonderfully put! One of things I always told my kids is that there is no such thing as normal..... Everyone is different! and if we weren't this world would be a damn boring place!! I wouldn't want to live in a world where we were all the same, would you?!

  29. I completely agree. When people talk about how minority groups deserve tolerance instead of complete acceptance, I'm always reminded of a line in The Hua Hu Ching, "To the ordinary being, others often require tolerance. To the highly evolved being, there is no such thing as tolerance, because there is no such thing as other."
